What's on the horizon for the 2008 legislative session?

Shawn Mitchell was elected to the Colorado Senate in 2004, after serving three terms in the Colorado House of Representatives.  He serves on the Health Committee and the Judiciary Committee.

The Associated Press Capitol Bureau named Shawn outstanding new legislator in 1999, and the Denver Post Capitol Poll ranked Shawn as one of Colorado's top ten lawmakers.  In the legislature, Shawn has worked to protect families and their property, including passing several laws to protect property owners from abusive eminent domain and asset seizure.  Shawn has also worked to strengthen the justice system, and passed measures adding 24 new judgeships; and bills making government meetings and documents more open and available to the public.

Shawn is an adjunct faculty member with the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he teaches courses in government, politics, and policy.  Previously, he worked as special counsel to Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton, where he was one of Norton's top advisors and also represented Colorado in fighting criminal appeals in the state Appeals and Supreme Courts.  Shawn currently maintains a private civil practice.

Shawn earned a B.S. magna cum laude from Brigham Young University and graduated from law school at the University of California at Berkeley.  He served three years on the Rocky Mountain News Board of Editorial Contributors and writes and speaks often on issues of policy, law, and society.  Shawn and his wife Yvette live in Broomfield with their seven children.  They are active in their church and schools.  Shawn's hobbies include rock climbing and fitness training.
